Youth Education Program
Greenbrier Valley Theatre has been dedicated to youth since its beginning. Our Youth Program encourages creative expression both on stage and behind the scenes. We provide children with understanding and respect for all aspects of the theatre. GVTs teachers are all experienced members of the theatre community, and our facility enables us to offer our students an education in the many facets of theatre arts, from building a set and making costumes, to writing and performing plays. A childs experience at GVT will help develop important life skills.

Greenbrier Valley Theatres After-School Drama Program presents High School Musical, Jr. 50 Greenbrier County students showcase their talents and hard work in this popular production. Admission is $13 for adults and $8 for students and children.
High School Musical is a story about two high school juniors from rival cliques Troy Bolton, captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a beautiful and shy transfer student who excels in math and science. Together, they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical, and as a result, divide the school. Despite other students attempts to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella resist peer pressure and rivalry, inspiring their classmates and teaching everyone an important lesson about teamwork. The television film & stage production boasts popular hits such as Breaking Free, Stick to the Status Quo, and Were All In This Together. GVTs production is the newly released Junior version of the popular show. The songs are all the same, but the running time is cut down to about 65 minutes.
The production will be directed by Greenbrier Valley Theatre Education Director, Kurtis Donnelly. GVT regular, Michael Sharp will choreograph, keeping much of the original from the movie. GVT also welcomes Kelly Schaaf as Music Director for the show. Ms. Schaaf, of New York City, has extensive experience teaching music to children. A courtroom has never been more lively and fun than in The Big Bad Musical! This smart and wickedly funny musical is great for actors and audiences of any age. The juryyour audiencemust decide the outcome of the biggest trial ever in the fairy-tale world! The notorious Big Bad Wolf is being slapped with a class-action lawsuit by storybooks of quirky characters who want to get even: Little Red Riding Hood, her Grandmother, the Three Little Pigs and the Shepherd in charge of the Boy Who Cried Wolf. With Sydney Grimm as the commentator on live Court TV, the two greatest legal minds in the Enchanted Forestthe Evil Stepmother and the Fairy Godmotherclash in a trial that will be remembered forever after. As our wronged fairy tale characters testify, the wolf seems deserving of all thats coming. Yet, even though the infamous Evil Stepmother resents doing pro-bono work on such an obviously futile defense, Mr. Wolf makes a good case for himself. Was he born a criminal, or made one? This musical has it allminimal set and costume requirements, a good balance of stage time for each character, multiple endings to make every performance unique and Bill Francoeurs toe-tapping tunes!

What is the GVT Conservatory?
The GVT Conservatory is an intensive study of theatre and performance art for a select few of Greenbrier Counties most dedicated students. The program is for students ages 15-20 that have extensive experience and talent. Entry into the program will be by audition only.
The conservatory will meet weekly during the school year for hour and a half sessions (specific date to be determined by those accepted into the program). During this time participants will have the opportunity to work very closely with expert theatre professionals on developing their skills as an actor and performer. Here is a sampling of what the program will cover throughout the course of the year:
•The selection and performance of monologues both classic and contemporary, for use in auditions or competitions.
•Extensive study of partner scenes, including breaking down and analyzing the script, the rehearsal and discovery process, and performance.
•In-depth workshops on musical theatre performance, including preparing a musical theatre audition.
•Major acting theory and how to apply it to rehearsal and performance.
•The study of major works of theatre and how they can strengthen our performances today.
•Public performances will be held to showcase work completed.
•Possible field trips to experience significant theatre events.
•and much more!
Acceptance into the program will require a strict commitment to weekly attendance and to rehearsal and study outside of class, since discipline and commitment are the only way to truly grow and improve as an actor and performer. Prior experience in formal classes (either at GVT or elsewhere) is not a requirement for acceptance; however a committed desire to grow your talent is necessary.
