Lewisburg Designated a Certified Arts Community

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History has designated Lewisburg as a Certified Arts Community.  According to the Division of Culture and History’s web page the Certified Arts Community Program “recognize[s] communities that have shown commitment to expanding public participation in the arts or preserving historic sites.”

In a letter to Mayor John Manchester, Director of Arts Jeff Pierson said that “Lewisburg over the past few years has proven its role in the arts community by encouraging such groups as Trillium Performing Arts Collective, West Virginia Arts Presenters, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, Carnegie Hall, and Dottywood.”  In his letter Mr. Pierson also recognized the Cooper Gallery, Harmony Ridge Gallery, and the New Horizon Gallery as well as Lewisburg’s First Fridays.

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History notes that, “to be eligible, communities must support arts organizations by providing volunteer governance, financial contributions and audiences for arts programming; adopt a resolution indicating recognition of the importance of the arts to economic development, educational quality and civic involvement; and demonstrate successful collaborations between arts, humanities and heritage groups, and business leaders and jurisdictional agencies.”

In the fall of 2006 numerous arts organizations and businesses in the county came together to plan and promote events and activities in the area by forming the Greenbrier Valley Cultural Roundtable.  This group meets quarterly to share performances and activities and to discuss how the active arts scene of the area can be promoted.  The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 3 at Greenbrier Valley Theatre and is open to all arts organizations, businesses, and supporters of the arts.
